The 26-year-old scored six times in 12 appearances for the Saints in the second half of the 2016-17 season following his arrival from Napoli in the winter window.

The 6ft 1in centre-forward only managed five Premier League goals during a disappointing 2017-18 campaign, however, and had been tipped to move on this summer.

The Italian scored a smart goal against Jiangsu Suning on Wednesday though as he headed a beautiful Stuart Armstrong cross into the back of the net during the pre-season clash.

There is no question that Gabbiadini has talent, and the striker has been tipped to enjoy a strong 2018-19 season by the Southampton supporters.

If Saints boss Mark Hughes can get Gabbiadini fit and firing then there is absolutely no reason why the centre-forward cannot score plenty of goals at this level of football.
